Novell's eDirectory, formerly known as NDS, is used by many large organizations to facilitate the organization, classification and naming of network resources. It provides hierarchical object oriented designation which leads to high performance and excellent manageability. Access to this database is required in order to ensure a readily accessible and manageable network and thus has to be an essential part of the backup and disaster recovery plans of any organization using eDirectory.

With eDirectory, the database used for storing security and access information is partitioned and distributed. Still it is seen as a logical single entity, which has many internal links and references between its objects.

A conventional SMS based back up solution cannot fulfill the needs for the backup and restoration of such an object oriented database. It fails to back up the links and references; treating objects like simple files and containers like normal folders. This leads to the loss of links between objects, references to other objects, file rights, and object ID's resulting in costly delays through the need for time consuming, manual intervention after restore. The network might even be unusable.

Due to this fact a different backup approach is needed for distributed databases like eDirectory. DeTroubler is the world's first object-oriented back up and restore software creating a unique and dynamic backup possibility for eDirectory.

The product backs up only the eDirectory information and writes it into a Pervasive SQL database file, so it is not intended to replace but to be a companion to the standard data back up and restore software already in use. With DeTroubler, lost objects or containers are immediately accessible after restore. Restored users can log onto the net work directly after restore, because all network resources are available. There is no need to manually restore links and rights. DeTroubler offers the unique feature of allowing the restoration of selected objects to the eDirectory as well as the ability to select from a history of the object's backups. Furthermore, should the whole eDirectory be lost or corrupted, the entire tree can be automatically restored. eDirectory will then be automatically rolled out to all servers, the objects and schema extensions will be restored, all partitions and replicas will be recreated and also time synchronization's will be recovered.

DeTroubler for eDirectory is the only program world wide which guarantees a comprehensive back up and restore of the eDirectory, resulting in the recovery of all eDirectory information without any manual intervention.
